ODC announces contractor for new boardwalk build

Osoyoos Desert Society is pleased to announce the construction contract to replace the 1.5 km elevated wooden boardwalk trail at the Osoyoos Desert Centre has been awarded to C3 Industries Inc.

“As we wind down our 2021 season at the Osoyoos Desert Centre we are excited to be ramping up for this very momentous occasion which will walk us into our future,” says Jayme Friedt, Osoyoos Desert Centre Managing Director. “The boardwalk trail was the initial capital improvement of the Osoyoos Desert Centre over twenty years ago and it was definitely on its last legs! Tours along our boardwalk trail are an integral part of the Osoyoos Desert Centre experience. With an average of 10,000 guests visiting each year it provides an up-close look at our extraordinary and endangered antelope-brush habitat without disturbing it.”

Funding for the new boardwalk trail was provided through the destination development stream of the BC government’s Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program (CERIP) grant. The goals of the grant are to help bolster the recovery of BC’s tourism industry and provide economic stimulus to BC communities impacted by COVID-19.

“We are very grateful to the BC government for this opportunity. By working with local contractor C3 Industries not only are we going to get a beautiful new boardwalk but we are able to honour the objective of the grant to infuse economic benefit into our local economy and create jobs,” continues Friedt. “Our new boardwalk trail will be constructed out of composite decking material chosen for its durability, low-maintenance, weather-resistant, non-slip and long-lasting lifespan. It will see many, many more visitors in years to come!”

C3 Industries Inc. is an Osoyoos based landscape and property maintenance company purchased by Martin and Trish Hahn in 2017. The Hahns first operated the business out of a shed in their backyard. As the company has grown, they’ve been able to increase the number of employees and strengthen their commitment to provide a stable environment for employee growth and career development offering a living wage, opportunity for learning and a positive workplace atmosphere.

“C3 Industries is extremely excited to participate in construction of the new Osoyoos Desert Centre boardwalk,” says co-owner Trish Hahn. “As long-term community members, we are thrilled to work with such an important and worthwhile organization as the Osoyoos Desert Society. Being able to give our team year-round employment in a typically seasonal business is very rewarding, especially when that work is so firmly entrenched in the spirit of community development.”
