Education

One of the main goals of the Desert Society is to educate the public about our Desert Ecosystem. This includes a number of areas including Endotherms, Plants, Ectotherms, Ecology and Endangerment of this fragile system. Besides providing detailed information about these topics on the internet, the Desert Society will also feature the Desert Alive video series where biologist Joanne Muirhead will be showing us what is "going on" at the Desert Centre every month.

We will also be working with BC teachers to create content which can be used in schools as part of the k-12 curriculum. This will include the Kid's Corner, which should be ready by May 15, 2006 and a highschool section which will include worksheets, videos and handouts pertaining to Desert Biology and Ecology. Of course, biologist, Joanne Muirhead and the desert staff will be available for public tours or school bookings to answer your desert questions. Alternately, we will have an "Ask the Expert" section in the near future where you can ask questions online. Finally, we are planning a Virtual Tour, where you may walk the boardwalk and experience the exhibits from home or school!

We are very excited about our new features and hope to make our site into a powerful tool for educators in Canada who want their students to experience the wonders of the Desert!

Cool Facts

Impersonators: If disturbed in the nest, Burrowing Owls will imitate the sound of a rattlesnake to scare danger away!

Soaking Seeds with your Breath: The Great Basin Pocket Mouse doesn’t drink water.  In order to survive in the dry desert, it stores antelope-brush seeds in its burrow.  As the mouse breathes, the condensation from its’ breath gets soaked up by the seeds.  When the mouse eats the seeds, it gets the water it needs.
