About the Desert Society

The Osoyoos Desert Society is a nonprofit society that was founded in 1991 to conserve the biologically rich and diverse habitats of British Columbia’s southern interior. The South Okanagan is home to one of the largest concentrations of rare and at-risk species in all of Canada. Through conservation and education, the Society strives to generate public knowledge, respect and active concern for these fragile and endangered
ecosystems.

About the Desert Centre

In 1998, as part of its effort to conserve the South Okanagan’s unique habitats, the Desert Society opened an interpretive facility—the Osoyoos Desert Centre. In addition to an interpretive centre with hands-on exhibits, the Desert Centre also features a 1 .5 km elevated wooden boardwalk. Visitors are invited to explore Canada’s desert while enjoying a guided or self-guided tour along the boardwalk.
The Desert Centre, located 3 km north of Osoyoos off Highway 97, is open annually from April through October. For opening times, please go to our Hours page.
